Quick — can you list what’s involved in Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions? Maybe most of you can. Sadly, I cannot. Or maybe I should say I could not until I read Julie A. Palm’s “A Greenhouse Gas Primer.”
In this article, Palm defines greenhouse gases, delves into the different types (beyond carbon dioxide) and lays out exactly what contributes to each emissions scope. I found it easy to follow and it clarified some concepts that were hazy for me. Also, it reminded me how important it is to reduce these emissions. I felt the stirring that we need to do something to make things better — from personal to corporate levels. I appreciate when an article moves me to action.
This focus also feels timely because the first session of the International Sleep Products Association Sustainability Conference Sept. 10-11 in Atlanta addressed greenhouse gas accounting essentials. I know we have a number of sleep products companies that are leading the way in this area and the conference was a great time to network and discover ideas to implement in your own factories.
Finding solutions for manufacturers is also high on the list of mattress machinery suppliers. This month, Kathryn Greene wrote about equipment that is more automated, reducing the need for skilled labor and increasing efficiencies wherever possible. These efficiencies can add to a more sustainable workplace, with less waste. It’s also interesting to see where artificial intelligence is already in use and what these suppliers have to say about its future in machinery. Look for an article on AI in the October issue of BedTimes.
And while suppliers are meeting manufacturers’ needs, manufacturers are working to meet retailers’ and consumers’ interests. At the summer Las Vegas Market, several exhibitors showcased ways they were supporting retailers. For example, Spring Air International launched a new website with a store locator to help consumers find their nearest retailer. Therapedic International took a strategic approach and matched product lines with consumer buying behavior, such as health and wellness, affordable luxury and adjustable bases. As you can see, the September issue is chock-full of interesting and informative articles. I love when I pick up a magazine and learn something. I hope that will be the case for you this month. Happy reading!
